Manea Footprints of Kupe

Session Overview: Footprints of Kupe offers you a unique cultural encounter, journeying into Te Ao Māori, the Māori world. Hokianga is uniquely associated with Kupe as the place he secured for his descendants before leaving on his return voyage to our ancient place of origin in the eastern Pacific.

Within a generation, those descendants, our ancestors, returned to these shores. These events and histories are the foundation of our identity. Manea: Footprints of Kupe was developed from a vision had by local Kaumātua (senior tribal Elders) for preserving their heritage and sharing it with the world.

The descendants of Kupe welcome you, as do the spirits of our ancestors. Enter Te Hokianga-nui-a-Kupe, our sacred cradle of tribal histories. Walk with us in the footprints of our ancestor – Kupe the intrepid, Kupe the voyager, Kupe the discoverer.

Activity Options: Schools and groups will be warmly welcomed to Manea with a pōwhiri (traditional welcoming ceremony). They can then engage with our local guides to learn about the very beginnings of our nation’s history, ask questions, and view the dynamic 4D Theatre presentation, which captures Kupe’s journey to Aotearoa. Following this, you will move to view the surrounding landscape and capture pictures with the wonderful Hokianga harbour backdrop. Groups can then take their time viewing their historical Interactive gallery, which shares essential elements of our history.

Timings: The experience lasts at least 75 minutes, but they advise making more time to enjoy the local surroundings or link into other activities in the area.
