Go with Tourism launch resource packs for employers and educators

Go with Tourism has today released resource packs for tourism and hospitality employers, as well as secondary school tourism teachers.

22 MARCH 2023

Go with Tourism has today released resource packs for tourism and hospitality employers, as well as secondary school tourism teachers.

The Tourism Industry Resource Kete will aid employers in efforts to raise industry standards and build the workforce; and the Tourism Teachers’ Resource Pack will assist educators to connect with industry and deliver the new NCEA Level 2 tourism curriculum.

The packs are the latest addition to the revamped Go with Tourism website, offering a wide range of information for businesses, teachers, students and jobseekers.

Go with Tourism Programme Director, Heidi Gillingham, says that information sharing is an important step towards building the tourism and hospitality workforce and industry reputation. “By helping one another and sharing best practice, we’re increasing knowledge and ultimately working towards better outcomes that will improve our workforce.

We hope that the Go with Tourism website can become a one-stop-shop of resources and information for those involved with our industry.”

The Tourism Industry Resource Kete has been designed to align with the six pou and 14 key initiatives from the Better Work Action Plan, recently launched by the Tourism Industry Transformation Plan group and Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.

The Kete provides a list of resources, contacts and useful information intended to:

  • Assist the tourism workforce to better navigate issues including pay and work conditions, demand fluctuations, business maturity and scalability, and current and future skills gaps.
  • Ensure 360-degree business health, vital for successful and sustainable business.
  • Encourage professional development and improvement, across the board for businesses, teams and individuals.
  • Advocate for best practice.
  • Encourage industry and other sector connections, networking and sharing of knowledge.

In 2020, it was announced that the tourism curriculum would be updated as part of the NCEA Change Programme. Level 2 curriculum pilots are rolling out in 2023 and the Level 3 curriculum review is currently underway. Learning will centre around four “Big Tourism Ideas”: a better connection with te ao Māori; regenerative outcomes and ethical responsibility; empowering communities; and a better understanding of how tourism is shaped by the world around us.

A Tourism Teachers’ Resource Pack has been developed for each region of New Zealand. The 16 packs include a range of information and contacts, including services provided by both Go with Tourism and industry operators, that align with each Big Idea and can be used by teachers to create lesson plans, coordinate learning outside the classroom, plan field trips and build local industry connections.
