Student Q&A: Bella from The International Travel College of New Zealand
Throughout our "Education Hero" campaign, we are showcasing great students from tourism or hospitality courses all around New Zealand. In this case study, you will learn about Bella from The International Travel College of New Zealand.
We chatted to Bella about why she chose to study travel, tourism and aviation at the The International Travel College of New Zealand in Auckland:
Tell us about your course
I’m studying level 3 and 4 in travel and tourism and aviation. This includes communication, customer service and an overall explanation and knowledge of the industry itself. We learn skills and gain experience of what it will be like when you eventually progress in various career paths.
Why did you choose this course and to attend ITC?
I decided to study at ITC as it was one of the tertiary providers, I attended to do a short course whilst at my secondary school. This awoke some of my passion for the industry, especially the Flight attendant course which essentially showed me what I could be a part of and introduced me to the international travel college. I picked the course specifically to work towards this goal and explore what the industry has to offer and the possible opportunities that await us students.
What are your career aspirations?
I hope to become a stewardess, either on a super yacht or with an airline. But, ultimately, I want to work within an industry I’m passionate about and where I can put my own talents and skills into a role, and grow within a company and community of individuals who share the same interests and goals as me. Too also feed my ambition and desire for wanting to explore outside my comfort zones, learn and most importantly experience travel.
What you’re enjoying most about your studies?
Something I enjoy about my studies would be that I’m able to understand and have knowledge that I was unaware of previously. I’m also very fond of our learning process as we explore various types of learning techniques to help us learn in various ways to keep us engaged and motivated. The teaching is a lot more intimate compared to what you see at universities of where our tutor works with us personally to ensure our successes within the course.
What you’re enjoying most about your student life?
I enjoy the aspects of student life and all the things that contribute to it. For example, I’ve been able to form various new friendships within my class and the community of my class itself is like a family of sorts of which we all support and learn with each other. I greatly appreciate the lively opportunities of our field trips where we are able to venture with our class to numerous places and activities. I also feel it’s a good steppingstone into the industry comparison to my journey of where I joined a full-time workplace prior.
How do your friends and family feel about your study choices?
My friends and family are fully supportive and proud I’ve decided to part take in a course that can really help me achieve higher goals and qualifications of which create an easier pathway towards my goals. Before starting the course, I also recommended a friend who’s joined with me on the journey and we’ve both equally loved it so far.
What is your top tip for choosing a course and tertiary provider?
My top tip for anyone seeking to join would be that I definitely recommend you coming into the college for a visit whenever you’re able too or attend a short course that can bring you here though your high school gateway/pathways is the best way to attend. I recommend completing the first two courses to ensure the best possible outcome and more opportunities for you and your career to come.
