Consider a career in disability services

A career in disability services is like no other. You’re helping someone live their best life. If you have great communication skills (and what tourism worker doesn’t?) and are looking for a job with real meaning, then working in the disability sector might be the right pivot career choice for you.

New Zealand Disability Support Network represents disability support providers all over New Zealand and their Members are organisations that provide a wide range of services to support disabled New Zealanders and their families live a good life.


 Skills and Experience required:

  • Have great time management skills
  • An advocate for disabled people to have choice and control in their lives
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Can work independently and as part of a team
  • Able to relate to a diverse range of people
  • Sensitive to and acknowledging of people’s feelings and perspectives


Assistance and support can take the form of:

  • Providing help and guidance with shopping for food, meal preparation and cooking
  • Providing company and social connection around shared interests and activities
  • Facilitating community participation and connection through social, recreation and work opportunities
  • Assistance with personal routines such as showering, grooming, dressing and toileting
  • Assistance with routine house-keeping and cleaning
  • Providing in home respite so parents and other family members can take a break
  • Assistance to move and get about in the community and engage in activities. 


Pay Range, Hours and Training:

  • $20.50 - $25 + GST per hour. Rising to $21.50 - $27 per hour + GST from July 2021 depending on experience and qualifications.
  • Flexible hours (full time and part time work, weekends & evenings also available)
  • On the job training included and you can start working towards qualifications the day you start work
  • Opportunities available in a variety of settings – with individuals, residential, and community
